The Singapore Marina Barrage is a 350m wide dam in Singapore build
at confluence of five rivers across the Marina Channel between Marina East
and Marina South. The Marina Barrage comprises nine 30m-long steel gates
and acts as a tidal barrier that separates seawater from freshwater. The
gates also release excess rainwater during heavy rain from the reservoir.
The Marina Barrage also plays an important part in helping to alleviate
flooding in some of the lower lying areas of the island. The Barrage is
designed with environmentally friendly principles in mind. Features such
as a roof garden, solar panels and a rainwater collection system were
incorporated in the building. It was officially opened on 1 Nov 2008 as
Singapore’s 15th reservoir, facilitating water storage, flood control and
new lifestyle attraction and venue for recreational activities. The
barrage is recipient of the AAEE’s (American Academy of Environmental
Engineers), Awarded the Singapore Building and Construction Authority’s
Green Mark Platinum Infrastructure Award, the top award at the annual
